Seedlings Germination Process Guide

A step by step seedlings germination process guide which will help you to germinate your seeds and move them into your hydroponic system.

How to Germinate Seeds in cotton wool?

Easy! In order to germinate your seeds, you will need to put them gently on 2-3 layers of wet cotton wool, toilet paper or scottex.

The cotton wool must be humid and not too wet: just pour a bit of water on it, then rinse it. Afterwards you can lay carefully your seeds. Use clean drinking water. Tap water in this phase can bring diseases and fungus to your seeds.

The seeds will absorb the water from the cotton wool itself (do not let it dry).

Conditions necessary for germination

Keep your seeds in a fresh and dark place.  In general, the optimal temperature for seedlings is between 18 and 25 ° C.

We developed a reliable method for successful germination. Here following the conditions necessary for a successful germination rate:

  1. Pre-moisten starting medium with clean drinking water, pH6.0
    _
  2. Maintain a root zone temperature around 22 – 25 ° C.
    _
  3. Maintain air temperature around 18 – 25 ° C and 70-90% humidity.
    _
  4. Soft light until most sprout, then increase.
    _
  5. Feed 1/2 strength nutrient until light intensity is increased.
    _
  6. Discard weak and slow growing seedlings.
    _
  7. Move seedlings to production area once a second set of true leaves appears.

Seed Germination

The whole germination process takes time! In two or three days your seeds will show their roots. Be patience during this period and pay attention to do not break seeds roots during inspection.

After your seeds will show their roots (more or less 2mm roots), they can be moved into the Easy Hydroponics Seedling Sponge.

Do not let the seeds in the cotton wool more than 2-3 days, because, If you move later, the roots will be very long and will stick to the cotton wool, making it difficult to remove.

Seedlings

Pour clean drinking water in a nursery tray – then press with your hand the Easy Hydroponics Seedling Sponge. The sponge will absorb the water. Rinse the sponge in order to let it humid (not too wet – not too dry).

Then pour water in a kindergarten nursery tray to nearly flood the sponge. From the top of the sponge is about 2 – 3 mm.

Seedlings

With a small chopstick grab your seed with the root and put it gently to the bottom of the sponge (the root must be inserted in the middle of the sponge and the seed just behind the surface of the sponge).

Salad Seeds: 1 seed per sponge – Other vegetables as basil, Chinese vegetables: 2-3 seeds per sponge.

After 4 to 5 days in this seedling stage, your seeds will grow. Keep the water level in the tray to about 1/2 of the sponge.

Hydroponics Seeds are Growing!

Put the tray in the sun in the morning or evening, about 3 hours a day. Red sun-light frequency accelerates the growth rate of seedlings  (between 6.00am – 9.00am or 4:00pm-6:00pm is the period with the most red light).

Germination Process

After 7 days after rooting, Seeds will begin to have real leaves.

At this point you will have to change the water in the tray adding the hydroponics nutrients solution. Learn how to prepare the perfect hydroponics nutrients solution with our guide!

Once your hydroponics nutrients solution is perfectly balanced, you can add it into the nursery tray. Keep the water level to 1/3 of the sponge

conditions necessary for germination

After 2 weeks from germination the seeds are ready to move into our Easy-Hydroponics NFT Kit or Aeroponics Kit Systems.

Seedlings

Before to move the seeds, be sure the sponge is humid (spray some clean water on them). Make this step in the evening, so the weather is fresher and the little plants will have the time to adapt to the new environment.

Choose seeds of similar size in order to obtain a similar rate of growth.

Put each sponge in our Easy Hydroponics Pot in this way (you will prevent roots damages):

Airpots

Now you are ready to move each pot in our Hydroponics NFT systems or Aeroponics Systems!
